The 7 Days Ziwa Murchisons Bundongo Bwindi Primates Safari is an adventure through some of Uganda’s most popular destinations. The safari includes visits to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, Murchison Falls National Park, Bundongo Chimp Trekking Trail, and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

At Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, visitors can see endangered white rhinos up close. In Murchison Falls National Park, visitors can go on game drives and boat safaris to see elephants, lions, giraffes, and other wildlife, as well as the iconic Murchison Falls. The Bundongo Chimp Trekking Trail offers a chance to observe chimpanzees in their natural habitat. Finally, in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, visitors can go gorilla trekking to see these magnificent creatures in the dense forest.

Throughout the safari, visitors are accompanied by experienced guides who provide insights into the wildlife, culture, and history of Uganda. This safari is ideal for those looking for an immersive wildlife and nature experience in Uganda.

Notes on Gorilla tracking

  • Gorilla trekking is a strenuous activity and one should be physically fit to enjoy this tour.
  • Minimum gorilla tracking age is 15 years.
  • Minimum chimpanzee tracking age is 12 years
  • Anyone with signs of communicable diseases will NOT be allowed to track.
  • While possession of a gorilla permit is a guarantee of trekking and sighting the gorillas, the quality of the gorilla trekking cannot be guaranteed.
  • Maximum time allowed with the gorillas will NOT exceed ONE hour.

 

We strongly recommend the following:

  • Rain poncho (lightweight)
  • Long-sleeved shirt
  • Waterproof trousers
  • Sturdy hiking boots
  • Leather gardening -type gloves
  • Insect repellent and any necessary medications must be brought by you either from your home town or Kampala.
  • Still Cameras and Camcorders are allowed, but bring batteries and film from your home town or Kampala.

Day 1:  Arrival in Uganda

Today you will arrive at Entebbe airport and you will be welcomed by your safari guide.   Depending on your time of arrival, you may have an optional city tour of Entebbe town. Entebbe was the colonialists’ administrative center and has many buildings that date over half a century ago. You may also choose to visit Entebbe botanical gardens or Uganda Wildlife Education centre

Day 2: Drive to Murchison Falls National Park via Ziwa Rhinos sanctuary

This morning you will start your safari by driving to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, a two-hour drive from Kampala, along the road on the way to Murchison Falls National Park. Ziwa Rhinos is home to the only remaining rhinos in the country after the animals were extinct in the wilderness. You track the rhinos and visit the information centre and craft shop. The bird life on the ranch is abundant, with even the rare shoebill stork present in the Lugogo Swamps. In the afternoon we will visit the “top of the falls” for your chance to view the magnificence of the Nile. The park is cut into half by the famous River Nile where it has to squeeze itself through the legendary Murchison Falls, an impossibly narrow 7 m gap in a cleft rock creating a powerful explosion of white water.

Day 3: Morning game drive and afternoon Boat ride

After an early breakfast, proceed for a game drive. Elephant, Cape buffalo, Rothschild’s giraffe, Uganda kob, hartebeest and waterbuck are commonly seen. You may also spot oribi, bushbuck, Bohor reedbuck, bush duiker, warthog and bushpig. Large carnivores include lion, leopard and spotted hyena. After lunch, go for a boat safari upstream the calm Victoria Nile. En-route, marvel at the toothsome hippos, crocodiles and over this 17 km stretch you may see elephant, waterbuck and Uganda Kob. This is also a zone of many bird species like Goliath heron, Egyptian goose, pelican bee-eater, kingfisher, hornbill, cormorant and the rare shoebill stork. The boat will stop just tens of metres from the sinister, frothing and bubbling base of the falls. Accommodation: Heritage Safari Lodge

Day 4:  Chimpanzee trekking in Budongo, drive to Fort Portal

In the morning you will leave the lodge very early and drive to Budongo forest for Chimp tracking and enjoy a wonderful 2-3 hour forest experience. Budongo Forest is the biggest Mahogany forest found in the whole of East Africa as well as habitat to one of the largest numbers of chimpanzees throughout Uganda. The major tourist sites within this forest are: the Kaniyo Pabidi Ecotourism site, Busingiro Ecotourism site and Kaniyo Pabidi Ecotourism site which are located at boundaries to Murchison Falls National Park and dominated by Mahogany and Iron-wood trees. The 115 kilometer expanse is a remote chunk of the Budongo forest. Budongo forest is also a birding haven with hundreds of native birds species. After chimpanzee trekking, you will start your long drive to Fort Portal town.

Day 5:  Drive to Bwindi impenetrable national park

After breakfast you will start your journey to Bwindi impenetrable national park. You will then drive through the “Switzerland of Africa” area known as the Kigezi Highlands with its terraced hillside and winding roads to Bwindi. You will proceed to your accommodation located in the foreground of Bwindi impenetrable national park – The home of Mountain Gorillas in Uganda. You will relax and prepare for trekking the next day.

Day 6: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi impenetrable NP

Begin your gorilla trek in the early morning, and set off into the tangled and mist-shrouded forests with guides and trackers who are very experienced at locating the gorillas by finding the nest the family had used the previous night. The search for these majestic animals goes through thick untamed rainforest, where you’ll be scrambling over mossy rocks and through deep undergrowth and it can be arduous at times, but the encounter is worth the effort. Watching gorillas in their natural habitat is a memory that will last a lifetime. The experienced ranger guides will willingly share with you a lot of information about history and lifestyle of the Gorillas. After spending an hour with the gorillas we head back to the lodge and relax.

Day 7:  Drive back to Entebbe and departure

After breakfast you will be leave Bwindi impenetrable forest and start the long journey back to Entebbe international airport. You may have a few stops for photography and lunch along the way. Upon arrival, you will check in for your departure flight back home.
